2 lions born at Denver Zoo will be transferred to other zoos in effort to save species

2 lions born at Denver Zoo will be transferred to other zoos in effort to save species Two young male lions born at the Denver Zoo, now kicked out of their group, will be transferred to separate other zoos as part of a species survival plan, officials announced this week. It’s unclear where these two lions – two-year-old Oskar and three-year-old Tatu – will be sent. They’ll be moved early in April to facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums where they’ll be located with females, Denver Zoo officials said in a Facebook posting. In the wild, male lions typically would leave their birth groups around age two, when they’re big enough to compete with dominant males. Younger males often formed small groups before establishing their own prides.  Last year at the Denver Zoo, the elder lion named Tobias, the father of Tatu and Oskar,  pushed them out of their family pride. The two “have been enjoying each other’s company,” zoo officials said in their posting, “and now it’s time for them to start their own families.”Under species survival plans, ...

Letters: Banning abortion pills — Wyoming endangers essential medical care

Letters: Banning abortion pills — Wyoming endangers essential medical care Wyoming endangers essential medical careRe: “Governor signs measure banning abortion pills,” March 19 news storyWyoming’s Gov. Mark Gordon has signed the law banning the use of mifepristone and similar drugs for abortions in his state. While ostensibly leaving protections in the law for mifepristone’s use to treat miscarriages, the law establishes an ominous threat of government-controlled oversight of women’s medical care. That makes women second-class citizens and means doctors cannot freely render medical care without possibly violating the law.Because surgical procedures and medication pills for miscarriages are identical treatments to those used for abortions, patients can be denied miscarriage care or have care delayed because doctors and pharmacists fear running afoul of the law. Any law that creates hesitancy for doctors to uphold the standard of care for a patient represents a degradation of that care. One consequence of the law is that women may delay or avoid s...

Los Angeles County officials ID buildings in need of seismic retrofitting More than 30 Los Angeles County-owned buildings are in need of seismic upgrades, according to a list released by the county. From structures at LAC+USC Medical Center, to the county's Hall of Administration in downtown Los Angeles, 33 buildings are at risk because they're built with non-ductile concrete, which uses "an inadequate configuration of steel reinforcing bars, which allows concrete to explode out of columns when shaken in an earthquake, a prelude to a catastrophic collapse," the Los Angeles Times reports. This building material has been heavily criticized as contributing to the massive damage in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed more than 20,000 people in Turkey and Syria earlier this year. County officials hope to have the buildings retrofitted within 10 years, though the Times noted that "experts estimate [such efforts] will probably cost hundreds of millions of dollars."
