The Winter Hill Community Innovation School in Somerville has been closed for the remainder of the school year after a section of concrete fell into a stairwell inside the building, school and city officials said. While engineers were set to “conduct a more thorough review of the building,” many parents, children and teachers gathered elsewhere at the Somerville Public Library where they discussed the situation and ongoing concerns about building conditions at the Winter Hill School. Officials said the concrete fell outside school operating hours, while the school was unoccupied. The Winter Hill School serves about 400 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. It has programs for autistic children and children who are learning English as a second language.Son and grandson of late Red Sox first baseman George ‘Boomer’ Scott found dead in apparent murder-suicide

The Mets weren’t able to carry over the joy and excitement of Saturday’s Hall of Fame induction after losing its second straight game, 2-1, to the Toronto Blue Jays.Immediately after Blue Jays manager John Schneider was ejected for arguing a strike call, Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s RBI double gave Toronto the go-ahead run that led to a win.Manager Buck Showalter said he trusted reliever David Robertson to get Guerrero out to end the inning. The manager said he “considered” walking the slugger with Cavan Biggio on deck, who entered Saturday with a .181 batting average.Robertson was ahead, 1-2, in the count but the two-time All-Star reached over to hit a grounder past a diving Bretty Baty at third base.“Just trusted Robbie there,” the manager said postgame. He later went on to say “I just have a lot of confidence in him once he got ahead there … just got a firm ground ball hit where we couldn’t catch it.”Robertson said postg...North Korean leader’s sister vows 2nd attempt to launch spy satellite, slams UN meeting

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed again Sunday to push for a second attempt to launch a spy satellite as she lambasted a U.N. Security Council meeting over the North’s first, failed launch. The North’s attempt to put its first military spy satellite into orbit last Wednesday failed as its rocket crashed off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast. An emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council was still convened at the request of the U.S., Japan and other countries to discuss the launch because it had violated council resolutions banning the North from performing any launch using ballistic technology. On Sunday, Kim’s sister and senior ruling party official, Kim Yo Jong, called the U.N. council “a political appendage” of the United States, saying its recent meeting was convened following America’s “gangster-like request.”She accused the U.N. council of being “discriminative and rude” because it only takes issue with the Nor...Florida woman charged with child neglect after her car catches fire as she was allegedly shoplifting

SAN FRANCISCO — A regular fixture in the Giants’ lineup last season, Wilmer Flores has been mostly resigned to a bench role this year. With the 31-year-old veteran receiving an increasingly rare start Saturday, manager Gabe Kapler figured it would be a good time to call him into his office for a pregame chat.“I asked him to come in and shared with him how much I respect how he’s approached this challenging situation,” Kapler said Saturday before the Giants’ second of three games against the Orioles, with Flores penciled in at third base and in the cleanup spot.Already in a logjam at the corner infield spots, with LaMonte Wade Jr. at first and J.D. Davis at third, Flores’ name has been a rarer presence on the lineup card since the arrival of Casey Schmitt and the emergence of Brett Wisely, adding another two infielders to the mix. Saturday marked only his ninth start in 23 games since Schmitt was recalled on May 9.Kapler, who made a 12-year MLB career ou...Latest news
