Division 5 track: North Reading girls, Pentucket boys grab leads NORWELL – For North Reading junior Madison Vant, improving in the pentathlon was a huge motivator for the offseason. An increase in strength training, followed by a productive spring, paved the way for her to claim victory in the event at the Division 5 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Norwell High School.“You need to stay in a positive mindset and make sure you take it one event at a time,” Vant said. “When you’re doing hurdles at the beginning, you can’t be thinking about the 800 (meters) because that is hours away. You have to make sure you are focused on each individual event, warm up properly for the events, and perform to the best of your ability.”She rode a first-place finish in the shot put, second-place finishes in the hurdles and long jump and third and fifth-place finishes in the high jump and 800-meter to earn the victory. Nick Madrigal is optioned to Triple A as the Chicago Cubs make room for Kyle Hendricks’ season debut Nick Madrigal became the odd man out in the Chicago Cubs infield mix.The Cubs had carried an extra position player while using a four-man rotation since Hayden Wesneski’s demotion to Triple-A Iowa on May 15. Kyle Hendricks’ return Thursday night from the injured list to make his season debut — his first start since July 5 — meant the bench needed to be trimmed.Madrigal was the casualty, optioned to Iowa as the corresponding move.Manager David Ross said Madrigal took the news professionally and they had a good conversation in which Ross outlined his vision for Madrigal’s future. It starts with regular playing time in Triple A at second and third base.“We knew where we saw him and we knew where he stood in his thoughts,” Ross said. “Nick is a really high-level player. We want to get him back to the best version of him because that’s when we’re going to be at our best.”Madrigal’s fit on the Cubs roster took a hit w...

Omar Narvaez (left calf strain) officially started his rehab assignment with High-A Brooklyn.Nido has been out since May 10 with dry eye syndrome, a condition that occurs when tears aren’t able to properly lubricate the eye. MBTA takes steps to hike bus driver pay amid service cuts The MBTA is trying to chip away at its bus operator shortage by offering higher starting wages, and giving all drivers the option to work full-time hours.Under a new agreement with the Boston Carmen’s Union, the MBTA, for the first time, is allowing new drivers to start at 40 hours per week, rather than 30. This would bump an annual starting salary from $34,647 to $46,196, based on a $22.11 hourly rate for new hires. The option to work full-time will also be extended to part-time drivers already employed by the T. Those working beyond 40 hours per week will also be paid overtime, MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said.“That is an important roadblock that we have eliminated, and moving forward we envision that will help us greatly accelerate the hire of bus operators,” MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said at a Thursday Board of Directors meeting.Boston Carmen’s President Jim Evers said allowing bus drivers to work more hours is a “great way to get more workers in the door.” The shift, h...

DeSantis pushes past embarrassing campaign start, raises $8.2M ahead of early state blitz CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday sought to push past an embarrassing beginning to his presidential campaign, outlining an aggressive travel schedule as his allies insisted they remain well funded and well positioned for a long Republican primary fight ahead. While DeSantis supporters privately acknowledged the bungled announcement was an unwelcome distraction, there was a broad sense — even among some Republican critics — that it would likely have limited long-term political consequences, if any at all. For the doubters, the campaign confirmed Thursday night that it had raised $8.2 million in the 24 hours since entering the race, a massive sum that far exceeded the amount raised by President Joe Biden over the same period.“Do they wish they could do it over again? Probably,” David Oman, a veteran Republican Iowa operative, said of DeSantis’ bungled announcement. “Will we be talking about it in 10 days? Probably not.”DeSantis formally launched his campa...
