CSU Rams get back on track against CSU-Pueblo FORT COLLINS — Coming off an eight-day layoff and its first loss of the season, No. 17 Colorado State got back in the win column in dominating fashion Sunday against CSU-Pueblo despite a slow start in the game’s opening minutes. But while the scoreboard showed an 86-54 victory for the Rams at Moby Arena, they at times experienced some rust and inconsistency in their first on-court action since losing to Saint Mary’s on Dec. 9. The win improved CSU to 10-1 on the season with the start of Mountain West Conference play approaching.“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, which maybe can be anticipated after being off, but we found a groove there after a little bit,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said. “It wasn’t a work of art, but we also did some good things. It was great to get a lot of guys some opportunities. I thought everybody that came in was able to find a way to do something. “As expected, the Rams dominated the Division II Thunderwolves, in every offensive and defensive...

Isaiah Stevens scores 18, No. 17 CSU Rams shrug off slow start to beat CSU-Pueblo FORT COLLINS — Isaiah Stevens had 18 points to move closer to taking over as the program’s all-time leading scorer and No. 17 Colorado State shook off a sluggish start to roll past Division II CSU-Pueblo 86-54 on Sunday night. The Rams (10-1) returned to the court eight days after a 64-61 home loss to Saint Mary’s. They looked a touch lethargic early on but quickly found their rhythm, using a 20-2 run midway through the first half to break free of CSU-Pueblo.“It wasn’t a work of art,” Colorado State coach Niko Medved said. “But we also did some good things.” Stevens’ smooth shooting moved him 14 points away from breaking the school’s scoring mark on the men’s side held by Pat Durham, who amassed 1,980 points from 1985-89. Basketball Hall of Famer Becky Hammon has Colorado State’s all-time career record of 2,740 points.“The thing about (Stevens) is he appreciates those things a lot,” Medved said of school records. “But he’s also got the wisdom to know he’ll appreciate it a heck ...

Fire officials warn of these dangers during holiday season While the winter holiday season is filled with bright and beautiful decorations, fire offials are warning people that many of the popular ornaments like candles, lights, wreaths and Christmas trees can be potential fire hazards if not handled properly.  “People’s always think ‘It’s not going to happen to me,’ but if you’re careless with it, it’s just a matter of time before it happens,” Capt. Jeremy Frazier with the Glendale Fire Department told KTLA photojournalist Phil Ige.  Frazier added that there are at a least few Christmas tree fires in the city of Glendale every year, which is why the department decided to hold a demonstration of how easily the festive trees can go up in flames, especially if they are not watered properly.“Once you start to see flames in a tree, typically a dryer tree will be consumed in less than 60 seconds,” he said.  Officials with the Glendale Fire Department held a demonstration of how quickly a dry Christmas tree can catch fire in the ho...

49ers’ biggest win? Avoiding disastrous injuries to McCaffrey, Purdy and Bosa

49ers’ biggest win? Avoiding disastrous injuries to McCaffrey, Purdy and Bosa You want to crown the 49ers, go ahead. They won another NFC West title, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs and their first Super Bowl championship since 1995 are within reach. They’re 11-3, winners of six straight and the team to beat in the NFC.Yet within a 45-29 road win against the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, the fickle nature of football and how things can go sideways, simply because of the nature of the sport, were on full display. The 49ers may well be the best team in the NFL, but that can change in an instant. There will be some hand-wringing over allowing Arizona 234 yards rushing, the highest total surrendered in 113 games (including the postseason), but the 49ers were without starting defensive tackles Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave. Plus, there were some tackling issues by some of their best players, inside linebacker Fred Warner included. But run defense hasn’t been a problem and likely won’t be a big one going forward, although the Baltimo...

Kurtenbach: One drive perfectly explains why Brock Purdy is the NFL’s improbable but undeniable MVP

Kurtenbach: One drive perfectly explains why Brock Purdy is the NFL’s improbable but undeniable MVP Brock Purdy wiped his hands on his towel, licked his fingers, and scanned the field in front of him.And when he looked to his right, he muttered something that was anything but positive and likely not printable.Amid a surprisingly tight game against the Cardinals in Arizona, the heavily favored Niners faced third-and-11 from deep inside their own territory on the first drive of the second half. And unbeknownst to anyone but Purdy — and perhaps unbeknownst to the Niners’ quarterback too — he was about to make back-to-back plays that perfectly explain why the 49ers are the NFL’s team to beat and why the second-year quarterback who was once the last pick in the NFL Draft is the favorite to win MVP.Purdy was muttering because the Cardinals had put seven defenders on the line of scrimmage for the play. Arizona was coming for the Niners’ 6-foot-1 quarterback with a blitz, and there wasn’t much he could do to stop it.It turns out that it was the Cardinals who were in...
