PHOENIX (AP) — Brittney Griner won the opening tip and ran to her familiar spot in the low post. There was nowhere else the ball was going on the Phoenix Mercury’s opening possession of the season — not after what Griner had gone through to get here. Her back to the basket, Griner faked as though she would shoot a turnaround, spun the other way and put up another up-fake. Chicago’s Elizabeth Williams fell for the deke, Griner absorbed the contact and hit the shot to begin a three-point play. After all the emotional buildup, Griner got off to the perfect start in her first regular-season home game since being released after more than 10 months in a Russian prison.“If I was the first option, I was going to be aggressive and try to score,” Griner said.Griner did her part all afternoon, finishing with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. The Mercury did their best to pull out a win after cutting an 11-point deficit to two in the closing minutes. It wasn’t enough....This lively springtime asparagus pasta is defined by textural contrast

One of the pillars of great cooking is ensuring that each dish features ample textural contrast, an element as important as flavor. Once you strike the balance of sweet, salty, acidic, bitter and savory, it’s crucial to consider creamy, crispy, chewy and more. But incorporating different textures doesn’t necessarily require additional ingredients. As in this lively springtime pasta dish inspired by one at the River Cafe in London, the solution can be as simple as cooking asparagus in two batches. In this recipe from our book “Tuesday Nights Mediterranean,” which features weeknight-friendly meals from the region, the asparagus is finely chopped in the food processor. Half is sautéed until tender and half is added later in the cooking to preserve its crisp texture. One vegetable, two textures.A cup of cream and some of the starchy cooking water binds the asparagus into a silky sauce just thick enough to coat the chewy, al dente pasta.Lemon zest and a squeeze of lemon juice at the table ...Ford says it will stop competing in over-served markets, won’t be all things to all people

Five years and almost €4 billion worth of fines stemming from tougher privacy enforcement and the European Union is still asking if it’s doing enough to protect personal data.Social media giant Meta was the latest to face a big penalty Monday when Ireland’s privacy watchdog fined it a record €1.2 billion euros for privacy violations under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).The blockbuster levy hits at the heart of the technology sector’s ability to transfer data across the Atlantic and orders the company to stop moving Europeans’ data to the United States until Washington provides sufficient checks to keep such personal information safe. For GDPR’s supporters, the fine from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) serves as a vindication that the EU’s most feared tech law has bite, not just bark. (CNN) — The countdown is on, the stakes are high – and there is still no debt limit deal.President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are slated to meet again Monday, following a weekend notable for its lack of progress in trying to reach a deal to avoid the country’s first-ever default on its debt.Negotiations between the White House and the House GOP hit a snag and were put on pause Friday, and representatives of each side spent most of the next two days criticizing the other while defending their own positions. In a sign of a possible thaw, Biden and McCarthy spoke over the phone as the president was aboard Air Force One, heading back to Washington after a shortened trip to Japan. McCarthy told reporters Sunday that the call was “productive.” But that came after Biden had sharply criticized Republicans at a news conference in Hiroshima, where he said he wasn’t able to promise fellow world leaders gathered for Group of Seven talks that the US would not d...Orioles unveil City Connect uniforms, with colorful interior reflecting Baltimore’s neighborhoods
